Capoeira Summer Camp 2008
Come learn with us the Brazilian Martial Art of Capoeira!
Capoeira was created in Brazil by African Slaves during the Colonial period. The slaves would practice kicks, acrobatics, and fighting techniques to the sound of music so that their owners would think it was a religious practice and leave them alone.
With time, they used the movements they learned to break free from slavery and run away from the plantations.
Today Capoeira is a Brazilian National Sport and is practiced all over the world. As with most martial arts, it teaches discipline, confidence, self-respect, and self-defense. Unlike most martial arts, it also teaches acrobatics, rhythm, dance, music, the Portuguese language, and Brazilian culture.
Did you know?
Many Breakdancing moves actually originated in Capoeira! |
